Half a Sixpence opened on April 25, 1965 at the Broadhurst Theatre and ran for 512 performances. It has music and lyrics by David Heneker and a libretto by Beverley Cross, and is based on a novel by H. G. Wells about a shop assistant who wins a fortune only to find that money cannot buy love or happiness. It starred Tommy Steele as the shop assistant, Carrie Nye, Polly James, and John Cleese (Young Walsingham).
A successful London run was followed by a Broadway one. Songs: "All in the Cause of Economy," "She’s Too Far Above Me," "If the Rain’s Got to Fall," "Money to Burn," and "Flash, Bang, Wallop!".
