Irma La Douce (1960) won six Tony Awards, including Best Actress. A Paris “poule” works to support her impoverished lover against his wishes. He poses as a rich elderly roué and becomes her exclusive client. The double life is too demanding so he “eliminates” the old gent and is arrested. Songs: "Our Language of Love," "There is Only One Paris for That" and "That’s a Crime."

SETTING THE STAGE FOR
IRMA LA DOUCE

IRMA LA DOUCE open on September 29, 1960 at the Plymouth Theatre and ran for 524 performances; it starred Elizabeth Seal (Irma) who won a Tony Award, Keith Michell, Clive Revill, George S Irving and Fred Gwynn. Elliot Gould was in the ensemble and John Kander created the dance music.

NEWS EVENTS: Kennedy/Nixon Presidential election; Fidel Castro addresses the UN; Nikita Khruschev bangs shoe at the UN; Ebbets Field demolition begins; Freedomland opens; Third Avenue becomes one way as does Lexington Avenue; WBAI begins broadcasting; Outdoor telephone booths are installed - the candy store is no more; U2 pilot, Gary Powers, is captured; Adolf Eichman and Charles Van Doren are arrested but for different reasons.
