Lawrence and Lee were co-founders of the Armed Forces Radio Service. They co-authored the following plays: Look, Ma, Im Dancin! (1948), Inherit the Wind (1955), Auntie Mame (1956), Shangri-La (1956), The Gangs All Here (1959), Only in America (1959), A Call in Kuprin (1961), Turn on the Night (1961), The Laughmaker (1963), Diamond Orchid (1965), Sparks Fly Upward (1965), Mame (1966), Dear World (1969), The Incomparable Max (1969) and The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail (1970). They also wrote more than 500 radio and TV scripts.

Hugh Martin is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and studied piano at that citys University. He sang in the Broadway production of Horray for What (1937), afterwards forming a song-writing partnership with lyricist Ralph Blane who was also in the cast. They organized a mixed vocal quartet known as The Four Martins. He was vocal arranger for many stage productions including One for the Money (1937), Too Many Girls (1937), The Boys from Syracuse (1938), The Streets of Paris (1939), DuBarry Was A Lady (1939), and Louisiana Purchase (1940). The partners wrote their own successful show, Best Foot Forward, in 1941, then went to Hollywood in 1943 for the screen version and to write for films. These included Thousands Cheer (1943); Meet Me In St. Louis (1944), with Judy Garland; Ziegfeld Follies (1944); and Good News (1947). Mr. Martin returned to Broadway to work with other collaborators and write Look, Ma, Im Dancin!, followed by Make a Wish (1951), Love From Judy (1952), and High Spirits (1964). His later film scores (written with Blane) include Anthea (1954), The Girl Rush (1955), and The Girl Most Likely (1957).

Jerome Robbins began his career with the celebrated Ballet Theatre in New York, and subsequently appeared as a dancer on Broadway in Great Lady (1938), The Straw Hat Revue (1939) and Stars in Your Eyes (1939).
