Love From Judy
(Hugh Martin)

Read the Reviews

Love From Judy takes place in the New Orleans of 1903 and was written a quarter of a century before the much-loved Annie. The composer, Hugh Martin, is best known for his movie musicals - Meet Me In St. Louis and Make a Wish, and the Broadway musicals Best Foot Forward; Look Ma, I’m Dancin’!; and High Spirits.

Based on the classic Victorian novel Daddy Long Legs written by Jean Webster in 1912, the musical opened on September 25, 1952 at London’s Saville Theatre where it ran for over two years. Its original stars were the then 20-year old Jeannie Carson and the legendary Adelaide Hall (Duke Ellington’s vocalist in the 1920s and a singer and dancer at the Cotton Club).

The Daddy Long Legs story has charmed millions in its 90-year history. As a play, it was adapted by the novelist and opened on Broadway in 1914 (starring Ruth Chatterton). As a film, it had four incarnations – in 1919 (starring Mary Pickford); in 1931 and 1935 (starring Judy Garland); and as a musical in1955 starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron.

Judy Abbott, an orphan, has never been adopted because the orphanage’s superintendent retains her as a drudge. A trustee, Grace Pritchard, is impressed by the young woman’s fortitude and convinces her friend, Jervis Pendleton, to send Judy to college. Because Judy rooms with Jervis’ cousin, the two spend increasing amounts of time together and ultimately fall in love.
