My Favorite Year
(Ahrens & Flaherty)

Read the Reviews

The Sid Caesar-like King Kaiser has a TV show beset by wannabees, has-beens, and Jewish mothers. There are musical tributes to TV - "20 Million People" - and to the movies -"Larger Than Life." By the creators of Ragtime, Once On This Island, Lucky Stiff, and the film Anastasia.

Book by Joseph Dougherty

Stephen Flaherty (Music) and Lynn Ahrens (Lyrics) met in 1982 while attending the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. Ahrens had worked in advertising and then joined the creative team of the children's TV series School-house Rock. She formed her own production company, which won an Emmy for H.E.L.P. Flaherty, on the other hand, composed his first musical score at the age of 14 and attended the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. One of the team's first collaborations was a musicalization of the movie Bedazzled. In 1988, their first production, Lucky Stiff, opened Off--Broadway (Playwrights Horizons) and won both the Helen Hayes and the Richard Rodgers Awards. Their next effort, Once On This Island (1990), was a critical and financial success in both New York and London, and won the Oliver Award for Best Musical in 1995. My Favorite Year was the first original musical produced by Lincoln Center and had a brief run during the 1992-1993 season. Their production of Ragtime opened the new Ford Center for the Performing Arts in January 1998 and won the creators Tony Awards, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle honors for best musical. Separately, Ahrens wrote the book (with Mike Ockrent) and lyrics to Alan Menkin's music for Madison Square Garden's A Christmas Carol. Flaherty composed the incidental music for Neil Simon's play Proposals, and concert pieces which were premiered by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Their most recent collaboration was their touching musicalization of the Irish film - A Man Of No Importance.
